Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began performing in her teens and became part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place for her. Ford then applied for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate started to get noticed due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
